About

Materials Decoded is written by Ibtisam Ahmed Khan, a materials engineer who moved into data and AI work and kept noticing the same thing: the data underneath materials science is far less trustworthy than the models built on top of it assume.

Background

• BS in Materials Engineering, Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute (GIKI), with a nanotechnology specialisation.
• MSc in Engineering Management, Tsinghua University, Beijing, including logistics and supply chain management.
• Based in Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland.

What this site covers

Materials informatics, AI for materials discovery, critical raw materials, and the unglamorous engineering that makes scientific data worth trusting. Every piece is grounded in tools I have built and run:

• the Materials Data Series, 18 materials with cited dashboards;
• the Lab: the Trust Benchmark, the battery electrode screening agent and mfa-engine;
• hands-on tutorials and a resources directory.

The house rule is honesty. When a model score drops after fixing a leak, the lower number gets reported. When my own tools are wrong, that becomes a post too.

Working together

I take on materials data consulting, and I help UK businesses buy from China through China sourcing and UK import support, drawing on three years in Beijing. Both are described on the services page.
