Where Magnesium Goes

It Is a Lightweighting Metal
Group it up and one theme dominates: making things lighter. Castings and aluminium alloys together are the bulk of demand, and both are about shaving weight off vehicles. Steel desulphurisation is the main non-weight use.
Why Cars Love It
Magnesium's job is to remove weight. It is the lightest structural metal, about a third lighter than aluminium and nearly four times lighter than steel, and it casts beautifully, so a single die-cast magnesium part can replace a whole bolted-together steel assembly. Carmakers use it for seat frames, steering columns, dashboards and gearbox housings, and electric-vehicle makers want even more of it because every kilogram saved adds range. It also does quieter work: alloyed into aluminium it makes the metal in drink cans and car panels, and a small amount desulphurises steel. How Concentrated Magnesium Supply Is (% of 2025 production)
This is one of the most lopsided supply pictures of any major metal. China alone is about 86%, the top two (China and Russia) about 92%, and the top five basically everything. There is no second large producer to fall back on.
The Price When the Tap Closed (Europe, USD per tonne, annual average)
In late 2021 China cut magnesium output to meet energy targets, and European spot prices jumped roughly fourfold toward $10,000 a tonne. Annual averages smooth the spike, but the scare was real: European carmakers warned they were weeks from running short.
The Supply-and-Risk Story
Magnesium is the clearest example of a metal that is abundant but not available. The world will never run out: it is in dolomite, in brines and in seawater. The problem is that making it is energy-hungry, and China built almost all of that capacity. About 86% of production and 82% of capacity sit in one country, with no large second source. The United States still owns a smelter, but it sat idle in 2025 and its operator filed for bankruptcy. The risk became visible in late 2021, when China trimmed output to hit energy targets and European prices spiked roughly fourfold; carmakers warned they were weeks from halting lines. That is the magnesium question: not whether the metal exists, but whether you can get it when one country controls the furnace.
Why It Matters
Magnesium is the metal you benefit from without ever seeing it. Every time a car, a laptop or an aircraft is made lighter, magnesium is often the reason, either as die-cast parts or as the alloying element that gives aluminium its strength. It is the lightest structural metal at 1.74 g/cm³, about a third lighter than aluminium and nearly four times lighter than steel, and lighter vehicles burn less fuel and drive further on a charge. The raw material is everywhere, including the ocean, so scarcity is not the issue. The issue is control: about 86% of it is made in one country, with no large backup, and the world got a preview in 2021 when a Chinese output cut nearly stopped European car plants. So the magnesium question is not whether we have enough. It is whether a metal sold on saving weight has a supply chain light enough to depend on.
