Zinc sits just behind aluminium, copper and manganese in tonnage, ahead of lead, nickel and tin. It is a genuine heavyweight, and most of that tonnage exists for one reason: to keep steel from rusting.
Where Zinc Goes
Galvanising leads by a wide margin: a thin zinc coat that protects steel from rust. The rest alloys with copper to make brass and bronze, casts into zinc die-cast parts, and becomes zinc oxide for rubber, sunscreen, paint and animal feed.
It Is a Corrosion Metal
Group it up and most zinc is doing one job: stopping rust. Galvanising alone is about 60% of demand. Almost everything else is a smaller, specialist use riding alongside it.
How a Sacrifice Stops Rust
Zinc protects steel by corroding in its place. Because zinc is more reactive than iron, a zinc coating becomes a sacrificial anode: it gives up electrons and corrodes first, so the steel underneath stays intact, and the protection keeps working even if the coat is scratched. That is why galvanised steel survives outdoors for 50 years or more, and why zinc guards bridges, guardrails, car bodies, roofs, transmission towers and water pipes. Beyond coatings, zinc alloys with copper to make brass, casts cleanly into die-cast parts, and as zinc oxide turns up in tyres, sunscreen and animal feed. It is also an essential nutrient for people, animals and crops. A modest, cheap metal doing quiet, constant protective work.

The mine is relatively diversified: China about 32%, the top three about 52%, the top five about 64%. The concentration sits one step downstream, in smelting, where China refines roughly half of the world's zinc metal.

Zinc trades like the base metal it is: a few thousand dollars a tonne, drifting with construction and steel demand rather than spiking. It dipped in 2023 and held roughly flat into 2025, with refining capacity growing in China.
The Supply-and-Risk Story
Zinc is the most reassuring of the metals in this series, and its risk is the most ordinary. The mine is genuinely spread out: China leads at about 32%, but Peru, Australia, India, Mexico and others all contribute, so no single country can choke the ore. Identified resources are about 1.9 billion tonnes, so scarcity is not the worry. The concentration is one step down, in smelting, where China refines roughly half the world's zinc, partly because turning concentrate into metal is energy-hungry. The real pressure is slower: many big mines, such as Red Dog in Alaska, are ageing and grades are falling, so new projects like Hermosa in Arizona and the Bunker Hill restart matter for the next decade. For now, the metal that protects everything else from rust is itself in fairly comfortable supply.
Why It Matters
Zinc is the metal that buys time. Steel is cheap and strong but it rusts, and rust is what quietly destroys the built world. Zinc fixes that for almost nothing: a thin coat that corrodes in steel's place and keeps a bridge, a car or a pipe alive for 50 years or more. About 60% of all zinc does this one job, which is why it is the fourth most-used metal on Earth at roughly 13 million tonnes a year, and why you almost never notice it. The supply picture is unusually calm for this series: mining is spread across many countries, resources are vast, and the main concentration is in Chinese smelting rather than the mine. The slow risk is ageing mines and falling grades. So the zinc question is not drama or scarcity. It is appreciation: the cheapest insurance policy in engineering is a metal most people never think about.
